The Greek Taverna Survival Guide
Ready to paint the town blue?
Whether you are a seasoned pro who knows their “yassou” from their “yas-sas”, or a taverna beginner. Here is a few helpful things to ensure your time with us is the best possible experience it can be.
We look forward to seeing you soon.
Yamas! …
… And no, breaking plates is not a routine thing in Greek Tavernas.
Prepare Mentally & Physically To Eat & Drink… A Lot
It is a universally accepted truth that a Greek family in a Greek Taverna will order enough food for a small village. Some stereotypes it seems, are too true to ignore.
When you come to Taverna Nelos you are expected to eat and drink to you hearts content. In fact we may just take it as a personal insult if you don’t.
The Greek lifestyle demands that life is enjoyed in a slow process of eating, drinking, dancing and conversing with friends and family… Which in turn allows for more food and drink to be consumed.
So keep eating. Keep drinking. Keep dancing.
One last small piece of advice, there are no Greek words for “no baklava for me thanks, I’m full”.
Get Ready For Endless Discussions
The Taverna is a very important social setting in Greece. The Greeks will discuss any topic from religion and politics to aliens, their kids and everything in between. Greeks love sharing their opinions and listening to what other people have to say.
If asked “what do you think?” don’t hesitate to express your opinion freely and with passion! Or just agree, even if you don’t, for an easy way out. But remember to be respectful of other guests and our staff.
Abusive behaviour will not be tolerated in any way. You will be asked to leave and may very well become the next topic of discussion.
Children and young people under the age of 18 are welcome to join us until 8PM.
All children are required to remain under adult supervision during their visit, and behave respectfully to those around.
Don’t Sweat It…
We Run On Greek Time
A “Greek On-Time” is the rest of the worlds “15 Minutes Late”. Impressive for a people who have 3 words for “Time”.
If for any reason you are “Running On Greek Time” please let us know as soon as possible as we can only guarantee table bookings for 15 minutes .
In true Greek fashion, all our dishes are made fresh to order and will arrive to your table as it is cooked.
Salads and appetisers will arrive soon after your order. Meat dishes and seafood will make their way to you after, so remember to pace yourself… The Greeks invented the marathon after all.
If you would like your food to arrive all at the same time, please request when ordering and we will try to accommodate where possible.
Avoid The Hangover
We hope your time with us is memorable.
You’ll of met some new friends, had some lively conversation, maybe even learnt a new Greek dance. You’ll definitely of had some good food.
How could you not be happy?
We ask that when leaving you do so quietly and with respect to our neighbours.
Always drink lots of water between ouzo and before going to bed…
… Don’t say we didn’t warn you.
